# Hashtag Café on Grey Street

Think # Hashtag Café and you think fresh food fait maison. Except for the chips, everything is fresh,  made from scratch and preservative free.
The menu is simple, and comes from a range of cultures – French, Philippine, Japanese, Swiss  – les cuisines du monde. Depending on your appetite and the time of day, choose from fresh cookies (the salted caramel chocolate chip ones are full of gooey goodness), tacos (fish, chicken or cauliflower),  bagels straight from the oven (try the halloumi & tomato filling), salmon poke bowls, and the list goes on…  Hot drinks include tea, coffee and Whittaker’s chocolate, while the fridge cabinet stocks juices and cold beverages.

Claudy Schenk, the owner of # Hashtag Café, is a Franciphone from the Swiss Alps.  He has been in Tauranga since 2015, successfully operating a food truck and a stall in the former Our Place container village, before moving the “stall” part of his business to the Grey Street café when the village closed.

Claudy and # Hashtag Street Food remain very present with his food truck at sporting events, fairs and markets on the weekends, but Monday to Friday, 9am to 3pm, is # Hashtag Café time.

Pop in and say bonjour. Claudy is warm and friendly and chatty. The café with it’s orange seats and patterned ceiling has a slightly retro funky feel. The walls have artwork in a similar style. There is no multmillion dollar banana on the wall, but ask Claudy about the the object that les mouches ne touche pas – that has no flies and no mould.
